How Higher Education Can Help Build Regional Knowledge Based Economies in Europe

Thursday 25th October 2012, 9.00am - 4.00pm
Heartlands, Pool, Cornwall, UK TR15 3QY

Heartlands

The project partners warmly invite you to the final event of the pioneering UNICREDS project. For three years, UNICREDS has brought together partners from seven regions of Europe to investigate the role of university - government - industry partnerships (the triple helix) in reshaping the economy of peripheral regions. The final event will gather together representatives from regions in Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Finland, Sweden, and from Scotland and Cornwall in the UK.

Join us as we celebrate the work of UNICREDS, sharing a number of the valuable learning and outcomes of the project based on the combined experience of the partners in using higher education for regional development. We will also be showcasing a number of the good practices identified by partners and illustrating how these are already proving to be successful in bringing transformation to their own regions, and showing the impact of UNICREDS in the regions involved as we put the results into practice. Key players in developing meaningful and sustainable economic change, alongside the creation of excellence in further education, will be available throughout the day for discussion and information sharing.

We're delighted to welcome Change Management expert Luc Galoppin to round off the conference by inspiring us to keep taking action to build UNICREDS' exemplary good practices into our regions and to continue the momentum and work that UNICREDS has started.

If you are in any way responsible for the development of either further education or the regional economy in your area, then this should be an unmissable event for you, or for members of your team.

The event will take place at Heartlands, Cornwall's new cultural playground and part of the Cornish Mining World Heritage Site, and will be followed by dinner at Trebah Garden, a sub-tropical paradise on the south coast of Cornwall.

Registration has now closed; if you would still like to attend, please contact Lizzie Pridmore, tel. +44 (0)1209 721071, email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it

Wednesday 10th October – 5.30pm to 7pm

South West Partnership Office, Rue du Luxembourg 3, B-1000 Brussels

The UNICREDS project partners warmly invite you to join us for a reception on Wednesday 10th October from 5.30 – 7.00pm, after the EU Open Days workshops. The reception will be an exciting opportunity to hear about and discuss the findings from UNICREDS.

  • Peripheral regions with underperforming economies need cooperation between all their sectors to enable them to be competitive
  • How can triple helix partnerships foster a culture of innovation that reaches across organisational boundaries?
  • What role do universities play in regional development?

We would like to share some of the reflections and recommendations from our experiences over the three year project, including:

  1. The application of Smart Specialisation strategies to peripheral regions and those with underperforming economies
  2. The flexibility to make integrated Higher Education capacity investments in regions from the Community Support Framework programme
  3. Linking research excellence with capacity development, to enable research in less developed regions to be networked with mainstream Horizon 2020 projects to bridge from capacity development into excellence.

The programme details are still to be confirmed - watch this space for further details!

Conference theme: Design of a higher education model that fits with the specific geographical and social characteristics of the region

The first UNICREDS conference is an exciting opportunity to see the results of our work on the first aspect of the ‘triple helix’ collaboration for economic regeneration, looking at the ways that the physical characteristics and social demographics of a particular area can influence the design of an appropriate model for higher education.

Alongside the case studies from UNICREDS partners, there will be an opportunity to tour Campus Skellefteå and see how they have put their ideas into practice in their own model for higher education.
